Driving with ADHD

Our instructors are certified through Behind the Wheel with ADHD, a specialized training program created by Gayle Sweeney and Ann Shanahan to help driver education professionals better support students with ADHD and other executive functioning challenges. This training is designed for instructors who want to go beyond standard driver education and use a more informed, structured, and supportive approach when teaching students who may struggle with attention, impulsivity, distractibility, organization, or processing multiple driving tasks at once.

What makes this training different is that it helps instructors understand how ADHD can affect driving behavior, decision-making, and learning behind the wheel. Instead of assuming every student learns the same way, certified instructors are taught to recognize the unique challenges ADHD students face and to use tools, strategies, and coaching methods that help students stay focused, build safe habits, and develop confidence over time. This can include helping students manage distractions, strengthen routines, improve self-monitoring, and practice skills in a way that is more structured and easier to retain.

For parents, this means your teen is working with instructors who understand that ADHD driving instruction often requires more patience, more repetition, clearer communication, and a more individualized teaching style. The goal is not just to teach a student how to operate a vehicle, but to help them become a safer, more aware, and more prepared driver by addressing the learning style and executive functioning needs that may affect driving performance. This specialized certification gives our instructors additional knowledge and practical methods that help set ADHD learners up for success in a way that traditional instruction often does not.
